Courses overview :

Mandarin instruction is offered during the 6 week summer program and the total number of classroom hours is 120 in which including seminars about Chinese culture, Taichi/Kung Fu, Chinese poems, Chinese songs, Calligraphy, Olympics in Beijing, and modern China. Students will receive instruction in Chinese language (phonetics, reading, writing and conversation). The Mandarin language courses, offered by the Tsinghua University are conducted completely in Mandarin supplemented with English. All instructors are experienced teachers from Tsinghua University, other leading universities, and examiners of Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK).

This program provides students with full lanaguage and cultural immersion. Group excursions in Beijing give students insight into Chinese society and lifestyle, and provide students with a variety of environments in which to use their language skills.

  • Mandarin Chinese language lessons
  • Cultural seminars and activities
  • Excursions

Upon arrival in Beijing, students take part in an orientation session, beginning with the introduction of program staff, instructors, and Tsinghua staff. Discussion topics include practical advice about living in China, and the customs and cultures students will likely encounter during their stay. The orientation also includes a tour of the campus.

On a typical weekday, students have 3 hours of class in the morning and a 2-hour session in the afternoon. The rest of the afternoon is left open for study and extracurricular activities in Chinese.

On Wednesdays and Saturdays, there are excursions. Excursions to sites in Beijing—such as the Great Wall, Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, Summer Palace, Ming Tombs, Temple of Heaven as well as the scientific centers such as Lenovo and Chinese Aerospace Center —enhance and broaden students' perspectives on Chinese culture.

In addition to these experiences, students participate to take lessons in Chinese arts, such as Taich, martial arts, calligraphy, peoms, or music. One special event is an end-of-program talent show among students in all of the Tsinghua Mandarin Summer Programs. So, do bring your camera and videocam! The Tsinghua Mandarin Summer Program is open to students from all countries. This 6-week program is designed for English speakers aged 15 or above.
