Mandarin instruction is offered during the 3 week summer program and the total number of classroom hours is 36. Students will receive instruction in Chinese language (phonetics, reading, writing and conversation). The Mandarin language courses, offered by the Tsinghua University are conducted completely in Mandarin. All instructors are experienced teachers from Tsinghua University, other leading universities, and examiners of Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK). This program provides students with full lanaguage and cultural immersion. Group excursions in Beijing and weekend travel breaks for independent exploration of China give students insight into Chinese society and lifestyle, and provide students with a variety of environments in which to use their language skills.
Upon arrival in Beijing, students take part in an orientation session, beginning with the introduction of program staff, instructors, and Tsinghua staff. Discussion topics include practical advice about living in China, and the customs and cultures students will likely encounter during their stay. The orientation also includes a tour of the campus. On a typical weekday, students have 3 hours of class in the morning and the rest of the afternoon is left open for study and extracurricular activities in Beijing. Students also have the opportunity to spend time on weekends with local people so that they can experience the daily lives and customs of Beijing people.? On Wednesdays and Saturdays, there are excursions. Excursions to historic sites in Beijing—such as Great Wall, Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, Temple of Heaven, Ming Tombs as well as scientific centers such as Lenovo and China Aerospace Center—enhance and broaden students' perspectives on Chinese culture. One special event is an end-of-program talent show among students in all of the Tsinghua Mandarin Summer Programs. So, do bring your camera and videocam! The Tsinghua Mandarin Summer Program is open to students from all countries. This 3-week program is designed for Cantonese speakers. English speaking learners are also encouraged to apply to our 8 week course which specialized for Cantonese speakers (www.mandarinet.com/8wks.html). |
